Doctor Who Day at the British Emporium
Every year, the British Emporium hosts what has affectionately called by most Whovian’s as "Doctor Who Day." For at least five hours, The British Emporium brings in as many “Whovian large props,” “trivia” and eager cos-players as possible into their small parking-lot. People often retire into the nearby metal shop to watch old or new episodes, and groups such as the U.S.S Joshua and WhoFest show off their latest stuff.
This year the event was visited by a number of attractions including the U.S.S Joshua's very iconic Tardis as well as M Propmaker Max Kirklnads latest tardis. K9 as always was a popular attraction and local coplayers could be spotted posing with him.

This year, as in the past 3 years to date, Cosplay Gallifrey also came to play. This year, like last year
its members took home prizes for Best in Show, Best Femme Doctor and Best Male Doctor. This year however, Keeley Grazer and her pink daleks took the prize for bes kids costume.
April Shriver was awarded a new prize, “Best in Show” which all of the members were extremely proud of.
The British Emporium’s event is one of the small but worthwhile events Cosplay Gallifrey looks forward to every fall.

The Standard for DFW Cosplay Gallifrey
This post is inspired by three people: Pete Calenzo, Katie Maricle and Nicole Velasco.
In order to be a member of the DFW Chapter of Cosplay Gallifrey you must have one costume.
That Costume must be Doctor Who Themed is the specific rule, so within those boundaries, there's lots to choose from, like monsters, or Doctors, or objects. Some noted members in the past even dressed up like Producers Sidney Newman and Verity Lambert. As well, Doctor Who Extends into comics and Parody and even the books and Big Finish Audio which has some amazing companions and Characters as well.
The rules for having a costume are specifically simple.
As Pete Calenzo puts it: Cosplay equals are you trying to become a character.
Pete believes deeply in costuming and in personally choosing to try to make your costume the best you can.
In the past, we have invited people to join our groups based on many reasons. Some were very lucky, they looked remarkably similar to the actors playing the characters on the show. In fact some were very gratious and got interested based on the fact they looked exactly like the character.
All who we invite to join the group are welcome to be a part of it, provided they put together a costume, which doesn't have to be the 1,000 Steve Rick's coat or any of the numerous expensive coats or full costumes out there. Many members have put together wonderful costumes just using their closets, or their mother's closets or their friends closets.
We here at this group will never judge you provided you are trying the best you can given limited or full resources, or you rown creativity and ingenuity. We are not out to critique yoru costumes, or to approve them, however, we are a Cosplay Group, which means you must have a costume that is either completed or influx, and we don't care if its screen accurate.
Like all Cosplayers we love looking at Amazing Cosplayers, but this group doesn't live or die on whether we are or aren't the best cosplayers around. We love that many of our members are some of the best in the state and maybe in the nation. We absolutely love that idea and are proud, but in the DFW Chapter, we are not here to judge your costume or cast aspersions on it, not here to label is less than screen accurate and limit your membership--we are not here for that.
We are here to help you, guide you if you would like, and be friends and enjoy Doctor who in frienship and Fandom, but we are NOT just a fan group.
We have the word "Cosplay" in our name. To ignore that would make us just another fan group, so with this in mind let me clarify what a costume is for this chapter.
A cosplay costume for this group must attempt to be the semblance of a character, maybe through small choices, but must embody aspects of that character or idea.
With this in mind, you will see that most cosplayers who Cosplay the doctor do try to become him and copy things other than just his clothes. They copy his movement's and sometimes his mannerisms.
Wearing Clothes similar or right up a 100 percent the same as the doctor goes a long way toward that idea, so in that regard cosplaying a doctor requires a good portion of the clothing. We have set beginners at 45 percent capacity meaning, we believe at 45 percent you can become most of the character.
AS for other characters, each of those depends on the person. To apply the 45 percent to the Tardis does not work, and yet. there is something fun and playful about a Tardis Dress that invokes the Doctor's Wife, Idris the embodiement of the Tardis. But the Tardis can be embodied in many ways, through its iconography and its female nature.
It is for this reason that we count Tardis Dresses as a costume, and technically it is a complete costume. Do we consider this cannon--no. It isn't cannon. Do we consider it a costume, Yes.
With this in mind, we want people to understand, that most women are proud being the Tardis, they wear the Tardis dress, or Tardisesque outfit and when asked, they say, "I'm the Tardis." We believe this to be cosplaying, since the iconography of Tardis Dresses, captures the spirit of the Tardis,
With that in mind this brings me to T-shirts. For purposes of our understanding their are two typed. one is called a Fandom Shirt and is considered something that anyone can buy at a con or sometimes local store.
Fandom Shirts:
These types of shirts contain doctor who Slogans or imagery. They are Fandom shirts because they promote the fandom love of doctor who, but they are not part of cosplay. The doctor never every wears such, nor even do his conspiracy theory fans in the doctor who world . Shirts like this cannot be considered Cosplay.
Cosplay Shirts
Now these types of shirts are a new thing, and there are even printed dresses and for Daleks, Tardises and Doctor's clothing that can be bought and can be incorporatad into a Cosplay. They key here, is that buying the shirt only isn't enough.
Our thoughts in this matter are very simple.
A beginning cosplayer may use such "Cosplay Shirts."
Tardis and Dalek Cosplayers may wear Tardis Dresses or Dalek Dresses and those may be store bought. Depending on what your cosplay is, we are okay with it, but most Human Character Cosplays, such as the doctor must be considered an evolving craft.
We will not monitor your Cosplay ever, but our key to cosplay is this, as quoted by Katie Maricle:
"The best guideline would be to ask members to put in effort. Try. Not necessarily spend money, but work towards something that they're proud to wear."
With that in mind, that is our stance on cosplay T-shirts and fandom T-shirts. DFW Cosplay Gallifrey's stands by this policy for all members.

What Cosplay Gallifrey is and What It Defintiely is Not
In March of 2009 Cosplay Gallifrey was born, David Tennant was still the doctor, but was also almost on his way out and an unknown named Matt Smith was soon to take the reigns.
At the end of all-con 2010 there were 7 people in Doctor Who Costume and those seven members made up the original base of Cosplay Gallifrey.
For a short period of time, we rose from 7 members to 48, and initially those early members were invited in with the understanding that rules would be implemented, but that for the most part members were required to have a costume.
Initial members also began posting Doctor Who Updates, links and news, and from this our group began to grow.
In some ways, getting new members was part curse and part blessing--early individuals had an opportunity to become members, but they could also invite new members--the problem there, was that certain people began to use the group as a hookup site, or that people joined and sat on the site, pretending they were unaware it was a cosplay group.
These numbers were very very large and even though I wan't the president, myself and others were complacent in turning our heads to some of those members. The later cleanup of what we labeled "fans" was slightly messy, due to two factors.
Some members forgot why the group was started, and others felt that it was unfair to remove them, even though they were inactive--kindness was used constantly, but for lack of a better term, members of this group failed to do many things--like checking the board, like answering questions, or working on a doctor who cosplay.
One such discussion is still on the board for you to read, its clear the member didn't have a costume, nor were they willing to build a costume, nor be a real part of the group--when asked if the person would be willing to make a costume the person gave vague anwers, laced with attitude--and to be honest, the time of complacency is over.
Other groups out on the internet, cosplay groups, require the same things we require, one event, one costume.
This seems to most of the officers and myself as utterly fair. Though I will be honest, people left the group when I tried to instill these rules. I thought long and hard about whether I should turn my head again, but then after a while, i put my foot down hard.
We lost people, and I'm going to explain why, it has something to do with Ambition.
For those of you who don't know me, i was raised by a father and mother who were both teachers. I myelf am a professor of English at a community college in Dallas. On a daily basis, I encounter students with little or no ambition or initatiative.
I can only define it as this because there are no other words to describe it.
This lack of ambition or "strive" or "initiative" worms its way into their behavior.
It affects their work, which to be completely honest, is sloppy, thrown together last minute, and their study habits are non-existent, their ambition to read--let's be honest, they don't read. I look at the spines of their 50 dollar books and there are no ridges, because the books have never been opened.
All of this to me is part of a larger apathy that infects a lot of people.
This apathy is rampant, and when I look at these kind of people, I dislike them more and more.
If this seems like a personal rant, i apologize. This apathy infected our group and from time to time, it rears its ugly head.
It told members not to try, or it makes them not try in many many ways.
And let me be as kind as possible about one thing, if you are in our group, for the trickle of information that comes through it about Doctor Who Fandom--and thats all you're in it for, and have no intention of being a part of our future, except to sit on your butt--please, with all the respect and kindness I can muster--LEAVE!
Now, before this becomes a gloom and doom essay, lets point to what we do do.
As a group, Cosplay Gallifray has become a leader among other Cosplay organizations here in Dallas.
We DO A LOT of cool stuff, and people know it--there's also a lot of professional jealousy that comes from that. Here are some examples of what we've done. We frequent all-con every year.
All-con is our anniversary date and we do a photo-shoot at All-con every year since our inception.
From Day one, the officers and I tried to find a niche for any cosplayer who was on the fence about what they wanted to be, and any cosplayer who wanted to be 10 or 11 was never hindered in anyway based on their looks, body weight, height, age or race--ever.
From Day one, we debated about projects that we could do that would push the limit of our group, and decided we would try all manner of things.
Most of these things, all require costuming or at least attendance, but at no point before recently were the words, "We can't do that..." or "why would we do that?" or "This is beyond us." or my absolute favorite, "We're just a cosplay group..." ever uttered.
The last statement is as far as i can gather the one said most recently.
The last statement, for me, draws on that disgusting spirit of apathy that essentially says, "Meh," or "why Bother," or "What's the point?" of "YOU CAN"T DO IT." To me this statement also says, "Your group is a joke and weak." and this was uttered by an officer.
And having tried to talk to this ex-officer, about how this statement isn't "Harmless" or "a joke." or even "No big deal"--I hit a wall.
The officer in question wanted to remain an officer, but couldn't be asked to rethink his/her statement. The officer in question also didn't want to do anything for the group, other than take credit for every thing the group did. The officer adamantly refused to admit that the group had any potential, or as far as I'm concerned "basic value" or worth--any worth.
So after extensive argumentation this officer was removed as an officer. As you might imagine this upset him, but after arguing for days and weeks, it came down to the basic idea that an officer either leads by example or they shouldn't be an officer.
Now to the statement. "We're just a cosplay group.." is a damaging statement, especially if it came out of the mouth of a president.
Saying that kind of thing, is the first step to believing it. Believing it leads straight to apathy. How can I expect a person with such passive language to go beyond the pale, or push the limits of what this group can do?
The answer is the person can't. A person acts as they usually believe. A leader who utters something akin to "the masses believe what I tell them," or "what's the bother of trying..." will do nothing. That level of complacency will always infect, degrade and destroy, the bright and shining beacon that is ingenuity and initiative. Someone must stand at the lighthouse, and someone must be vigilant to a future that needs ideas, and desire, lest the flame of ingenuity be snuffed.
There's no excuse for this and I as president want people with initiative and ideas.
As the new president of this group with new goals, and new rules for a new future, I will ever utter this--for we are more than "just a cosplay group," and we've proven it for 4 years.
After invading Scarborough Faire, they instituted Time Traveler's Day--thanks to Cosplay Gallifrey. YES thanks to us. We have built Tardises, we've shown up to conventions and brought new members into the fold. We've written fan films, and are in the process of filming them, We've made contacts with KERA, and might be helping them on television, and we may be filming our first Adaptation of a radio drama. As far as i'm concerned we've just scratched the surface of our possibilities.
As of 2010 my end game was to bring a Doctor Who Convention to texas and be a major part of it, and WE DID that. We were a major part of that. Now we're onto our new season, and we need go getters, and people with ambition. We need ideas and ambition and drive and those who seek to find and do not yield. Help us keep the group alive--help us keep it in striving and pushing beyond the limits of what some apathetic individuals believe it to be and only be.

Cosplay Gallifrey's Bio
DFW Cosplay Gallifrey is a Cosplay Organization and Fan Group originating in the DFW Area. Its purpose is to elevate Doctor Who Cosplay to a larger level, eventually nationally.
Cosplay Gallifrey hopes to bring all Doctor Who Cosplay under one banner in the same vein that the 501st has brought Star Wars Cosplay under a national standard.
Cosplay Gallifrey is devoted to three principals: Providing creative activities and outlets for its Cosplayers, Connecting Doctor Who Cosplayers across the United States and elsewhere, and providing resources for both new and established Cosplayers to enter or succeed in the cosplay world. Cosplay Gallifrey is a Cosplay Organization First and Fan group second.
Recently, Cosplay Gallifrey opened a second chapter in Tulsa, Oklahoma, TOK Cosplay Gallifrey, which is growing rapidly. Cosplay Gallifrey has contacts and unofficial friends with several other groups around the country.

Meet Your Officers
Lord High President James Enelow
James Enelow is the current president and a “founder” of DFW Cosplay Gallifrey. He goes under the Con name “Glitchmatic” and has been Cosplaying since 2009. The majority of his Cosplays are Doctor Who Cosplay, but he has been trying to break out of that mold. James is also a writer, blogger and he teaches English at several colleges in Dallas and Plano. He promotes the use of science fiction film and imagery in his classes to keep students interested. Every Halloween he comes into class dressed as the 4th doctor.
He is a currently published writer, and has several blogs, including “Truth and Cosplay,”
"DFW Cosplay Gallifrey: the Blog" and "Juxtaposition Collision" all of which deal with the wisdom and wonder of Nerd Fandom.
My job is to run the general day-to-day of our organization--and generally the buck stop with me. I generally try to take on a lot more. In order not to be cliche, let me clearly say, my door is always open. I try to fill a lot of roles, but I also take pride in being connected directly with every cosplayer in our group.

My favorite genres to cosplay are historical dramas, sci-fi, and anime. I like costumes that play to my strengths, which happen to be complex pattern drafting, historical clothing, and corsetry. I also like coming up with original concepts based on my favorite fandoms. Cosplay is a great chance to learn and improve my skills. My very favorite cosplay character is River song (Doctor who). In my spare time I am also a events promoter for festivals and nightclub events and the official events liason for DFWCG.
